Body awareness is beyond looking after your health; it is about maintaining physical and over all well-being, looking after the physical vehicle, the container of the consciousness that you are, which supports you throughout your life’s journey; starting at any time – especially when you are well. If you want to realise you potential and live the life the life you were meant to have; then look after your vehicle!
When you think about it, without your physical well-being, you would not be able to feel, think, work, play, start a family or have children, earn the money you need to have the lifestyle you desire; to travel, or buy a home, write a book, or start a business – whatever your dreams and aspirations may be. Looking after the body includes diet, lifestyle, and physical regime.
It is now scientifically accepted that what we eat chemically influences our mental health too, “a sound mind is in a sound body”. Developing body awareness is also about developing Body Intelligence, which is a criterion of how well attuned, or body-aware, we are of the signals it provides us giving off information on what is good and what is not for our general well-being.
Body and Diet
Several years ago, I read an article about a diet experiment on a group of kindergarten children where it was left up to them to eat what they wished from a wide variety of food. To begin with, the children generally opted for ‘junk’ rich and sweet foods. However, within few weeks; they naturally began to choose to eat good healthy food of their own accord. If we learn to tune into our bodies, it will let us know what is naturally good for it.
If you have the perspective that the body is the receptacle of our soul, you will see that an imbalance in food intake is likely to affect both our spirit and body. Mood swings, for example, is an indicator that something is out of balance, and what we eat can be the right place to start making some changes.
The catch phrase ‘mood food’ and TV programmes such as You Are What You Eat have certainly captured the imagination of the public in the UK. They have shaped our bodies as well as our attitudes towards food and the way it makes us feel. In the words of Hippocrates “Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.”
The food we eat affects how and what our body assimilates and benefits from, which directly affects the cellular chemistry of our body, the bloodstream that nurtures those cells, and in turn our overall physical and mental and emotional well-being.
In May 2015, part of a study into pesticides in foods, which was commissioned by Swedish supermarket chain Coop and conducted by The Swedish Environmental Research Institute; demonstrated how a Swedish family eating only organic two weeks had almost all the pesticides found in their bodies gone. The two parents and their three children had their urine tested before the study and it was found to contain a number of different pesticides including insecticides, fungicides and plant growth regulators. To me, this indicates a direct link between our well-being and the state of the soil and environmental conditions that are prevalent in farming and growing food.
Moreover, apart from food intake, we also have to ensure that we are drinking enough water (we are 70% water); and that we become aware of the need to connect our body with nature too; going out for a walk, for example, especially if one happens to work in an office and for long hours, or from time to time, going for a walk in the woods or forests (my favourite outdoor activity, which I will), or hiking.
Nature has a way of balancing and healing our physical bodies, as well as minds. When is the last time you swam in a lake, river or sea? To me, star bathing is just as invigorating as sun bathing! My point is, allow your physical body to experience all the natural elements whenever possible.
When health is absent,
Wisdom cannot reveal itself,
Art cannot manifest,
Strength cannot fight,
Wealth becomes useless
And intelligence cannot be applied. Herophilus
